Dr. A. Kavitha – Professor & Head Of the Department

Dr. A. Kavitha, Professor and Head of Department of Biomedical Engineering has over 24 years of teaching experience. She has 18 years of research experience in the field of Medical Image processing, Bo Signal processing and Extended Reality. She received her B.E (EEE) degree from the University of Madras, M.S. (By Research) and Ph. D. both specializing in Biomedical Instrumentation from Anna University, Chennai. Her current research interests include Cognitive neuroscience, Mental imagery, Neuroimaging, Bio Signal Processing, Bone biomechanics and Virtual/Augmented reality.
She is a recognized supervisor in the School of Electrical Engineering, Anna University. Currently, two scholars have completed Ph.D. and 4 research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. under her guidance. She has published over 60 research articles in international journals and conferences in the areas of biomedical signal and image processing, respiratory mechanics, machine learning techniques, Virtual reality and cognitive neuroscience.
She is an active member in Professional Bodies such as Society for Neuroscience, Instrument Society of India, Indian Society of BioMechanics, Indian Society of Biomedical Engineers and IEEE. She is the Academic Program Coordinator of the SSN SACE – DREXEL MS program. She has been undertaking summer interns from the Drexel School of Biomedical Engineering, Philadelphia, USA under the iSTAR research program every year. She has various international collaborations with University of Bologna, Italy, University of Delft, The Netherlands, Drexel University, USA, Birmingham City University, UK, etc.
She is the Head of Centre for Healthcare Technologies (CHT), an interdisciplinary research initiative of SSN College of Engineering. She is the also the head of research team of RECYCL3D PLANET, a Canadian start-up which uses social, business, and engineering innovation to address the issue of waste, utilizing environmentally friendly recycling and manufacturing methods to convert waste materials into prosthetic limbs and exoskeletons. She has developed a VR/AR LAB at SSN and is a passionate researcher of Brain dynamics in learning and memory.
