Driving Engineering Excellence with Core Chemistry Knowledge

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1996. It serves to provide a strong foundation in Applied Chemistry which in turn serves as a baseline for all Engineering streams. The department has also undertaken the responsibility of imparting a strong foundation in Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry for Chemical Engineering Students.

The department has nine highly qualified and dedicated faculty members with Doctorate degrees in various specialized areas of Chemistry and active in diverse research areas such as Corrosion, Energy storage devices, Inorganic chemistry, Organic synthesis, Photocatalysis, Polymer materials, Theoretical chemistry, and Water pollution.

The department has a well-established laboratory to accommodate sixty students at a time for the Engineering Chemistry Lab Class. All the instruments used by First-year students are state of the art and a good number of sophisticated instruments form a part of the Analytical Physical Chemistry Laboratory.

Advancing Chemical Sciences, Research, Innovation and Environmental Awareness

The department has been recognized as a Research Centre by Anna University, Chennai for conducting PhD programmes and a separate Chemical Science Research Centre has been dedicated to carry out research in socially relevant technologies. The research centre has been strengthened by externally funded projects from NRB, DST and consultancy from industries.

The department has completed 9 government funded projects, and 3 Industrial consultancies successfully. At present, three 3 funded projects and one Industrial consultancy work are in progress. The start-up company, ‘Macromolecular Techno Innovations Private Ltd., incubated in SSN ifound has secured seed grant of Rs. 5,00,000 from “Start-up India” and two consultancy projects from companies to develop a prototype on self-healing polymer-based coatings for automotive and application.

Research scholars of the department has visited various international laboratories through student exchange program to experience the thrust research area. The faculty members of the department are invited to deliver the keynote addresses and invited talks for the various National and International conferences.
