Dr. Vijayalakshmi earned her Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering with First Class and Distinction from Bharathidasan University.
She then pursued her Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Communication Systems from the Regional Engineering College, Trichy, now known as the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy. She completed her Ph.D. at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, where she specialized in speech recognition and analysis.
As part of her doctoral research, Dr. Vijayalakshmi developed various speech recognition systems and pioneered a novel approach for detecting and assessing disordered speech, including hypernasal and dysarthric speech, in addition to analyzing normal speech. Her research aimed to enhance the understanding and technological advancements in speech disorders and recognition. During her Ph.D., she had the opportunity to work as a doctoral trainee at the National Institute of Scientific Research (INRS-EMT), Montreal, Canada. Under the guidance of Prof. Douglas O’Shaughnessy, she contributed to a project titled “Speech Recognition and Analysis,” further expanding her expertise in the domain.
Dr. Vijayalakshmi’s academic and research journey reflects her dedication to advancing speech signal processing and communication systems, making significant contributions to both fundamental research and practical applications.
