Pioneering Research in ECE at SSN

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering has established itself as a leading research hub, demonstrating remarkable productivity across publications, funded projects, and patents. Over the past five years (2021-2026), the department has published 313+ research articles in high-impact international journals and conferences, with strong representation in Q1 journals (IF >4), covering critical domains such as 5G/6G communications, biomedical electronics, AI/ML applications, and sustainable sensor technologies.
The department has secured substantial external funding totalling ₹1,330.82 lakhs through 44 projects from prestigious agencies, including DST, SERB, MeiTY, DBT, and DRDO, with over 100 additional proposals under review, demonstrating an active research culture. Innovation is further evidenced by 31 patents (14 published, 17 granted) spanning agricultural IoT, medical diagnostics, smart sensors, and communication systems, with peak activity in 2023-2025.
Research excellence is strengthened through international collaborations with institutions in Japan, Israel, Cyprus, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia, fostering global knowledge exchange. Key research themes include speech and assistive technologies, precision agriculture with edge AI, underwater/marine systems, electromagnetic compatibility, and next-generation wireless communications. The department has produced 4 books and 11 book chapters in 2024-25 alone, contributing to knowledge dissemination.
Notable high-value projects include a ₹2,180 lakh DBT proposal for AI-based precision banana farming and multiple SPARC scheme collaborations exceeding ₹79 lakhs each. This comprehensive research ecosystem positions the department at the forefront of technological innovation, addressing real-world challenges in healthcare, agriculture, communication, and environmental sustainability.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at SSN is committed to cutting-edge research, with faculty publishing over 400 international journal papers in the last five years, including in prestigious IEEE Transactions, Magazines, and Letters. Faculty and student researchers actively present their findings at flagship conferences in India and abroad. The department also fosters national and international internship opportunities in reputed universities and industries across countries like Italy, Japan, and the USA. Additionally, ECE students secure internships with Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) of the Government of India and institutes of national importance, enhancing their global exposure and research capabilities.

Innovation, Consultancy and Patents

The ECE department at SSN has generated Rs. 32.41 lakh through testing and consultancy services for government and private organizations in areas like Speech Signal Processing, RF & Microwave measurements, Underwater Acoustics Testing, and MEMS devices. Faculty members have filed 20 Indian patents, with 2 patents granted. These efforts showcase the department’s commitment to research-driven innovation and industry collaboration.
