Dr. S Thiruventakaswami, Professor, Department of English conducted a workshop on 'Communication Skills - Module 2' for the non-teaching staff of SSN College of Engineering on 28 April 2012.

Dr Aysha Viswamohan, Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras conducted a workshop for the faculty of the Dept of English at the conference Hall on 12 April 2012.

The Department of English organized the prize-giving ceremony of the SSN Creative Writing Contest 2011-2012 on 30 March 2012. Dr Swarnalatha R, Associate Professor, Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT M, was the Chief Guest of the day. She also judged the contest and the winners were announced and awarded during ceremony at 11.30 am in the mini auditorium.

Dr. S Thiruventakaswami, Professor, Department of English delivered an invited lecture in the National Conference on "Innovations in English Language Teaching" organised by the SRM Easwari Engineering College, Chennai on 30 March 2012.

A one day workshop on Office Communication

Dr. S Thiruventakaswami, Professor, Department of English conducted a workshop on 'Office Communication' for the non-teaching faculty of SSN College of Engineering on 3 March 2012. Mrs Usharani, Senior Instructional Designer and Language Trainer, Origin Learning Systems, Chennai and a Corporate Trainer for Soft Skills was a guest faculty on the occasion.

Dr. S Thiruventakaswami, Professor, Department of English was the moderator for the Panel Discussion on "Promoting Self Assessment Techniques " at the International Conference on " Technology Integrated Learning (TIL) " organized by Abdul Rahman University in association with ELTAI and Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Chennai on 2 March 2012.

The SSN Best Speaker Contest 2011 -2012
The Department of English organized the SSN Best Speaker Contest in three rounds, with elimination at every round: 1. Group discussion 2. Debate 3. Extempore. The first two rounds were conducted on 28 February 2012. Dr K Kasturi, Dean, SSN, judged the Debate. And the final Extempore round and prize-giving ceremony took place on 29 Feb 2012 with Mr. Robert Bellarmine, Former English Studies Officer, British Council (South India), Chennai, as the Chief Guest. He delivered a talk on "Where does the power of speech come from?" at 10 am in the mini auditorium.

Dr S Thiruventakaswami was the moderator for the Panel Discussion on "Is there a need for an ESP Syllabus in the Engineering Curriculum?" at the International Conference on Professional English (ICOPE -2012) organized by Vel Tech Dr RR & Dr SR Technical University in association with ELTAI and Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Chennai on 15, 16 Feb 2012. He also conducted a workshop on "Accent Training." Dr Divya John was one of the speakers for the Panel Discussion on "Is there a need for an ESP Syllabus in the Engineering Curriculum?"

A Guest Lecture on 'What is Good English?
Prof. Shireesh Choudhary, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras delivered a guest lecture on the topic, 'What is Good English' at 2 pm at the Main Auditorium on 13 Feb 2012.

Staff Development - An awareness raising
Dr. S. Thiruvenkataswami, Professor, Dept of English conducted a Faculty Development Programme for the benefit of the faculty at SSN on 21 January 2012. The programme aimed at imparting teaching skills in the areas of setting instructional objectives, classroom management, obtaining students' feedback in class and carrying out action research in the classroom. Mr. Jim Pywell, Academic Coordinator, KM Music Conservatory (Affiliated to the University of Middlesex), Chennai shared his experiences on teaching-learning process during the occasion.

Dr. S Thiruventakaswami delivered an invited lecture on the topic, 'Role of Pronunciation in Spoken English' at KM Music Conservatory, (Affliliated to the University of Middlesex, London), Chennai on 13 Jan 2012Dr.

S Thiruventakaswami delivered an invited lecture on the topic, 'Making Presentations at Music Concerts' at KM Music Conservatory, (Affliliated to the University of Middlesex, London), Chennai on 6 Jan 2012.

Dr. A Yuvaraj gave an invited talk on "Research and Writing" at Anna University, Chennai on 14 Sept 2011.

Dr Divya John conducted a session on “Use of Technology in Language Learning” at the "Seven-Day Faculty Development Programme on Teaching Technical English I" organized by The Department of English, College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University Chennai on 11 June 2011.

The Department of English organized the SSN Best Speaker Contest on 14 Feb 2011.

The Department of English, SSN College of Engineering, launched the first SSN Creative Writing Contest in July 2010. Accordingly, two literary prizes are instituted to attract and honour effective writing among the students of SSN: The SSN Poetry Prize & The SSN Fiction Prize. The winners were announced and awarded during the prize-giving ceremony on 25 Feb 2011. Mr. Mukund Padmanabhan, the Senior Associate Editor of The Hindu, was the Chief Guest of the day.

Dr. Divya John has been nominated as a member of the Board of Studies in the Faculty of Science and Humanities of Anna University of Technology Chennai for a period of 3 years.

Ms. P. Roopana was appointed the Chairman in the Central Valuation of Zone III for the English Board of Anna University at St. Josephs College of Engineering from 18 to 22 June 2010.

The Department of English organized a two-day workshop on “Energizing Engineering English: A focus on practical teacher-tested ideas for the classroom” for the English faculty of Engineering colleges on 24 & 25 March 2010.

Dr Divya John conducted a session on “The Use of Technology in Language Learning” at the Faculty Development Training Programme on Teaching Language Skills for Engineering Students, organized by the Department of English, College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University Chennai, 600025, on 5 January 2010.

The English Literary Club organized an Intra-collegiate English Fest on 23 & 24 September 2009. The Literary Club was formally inaugurated by Dr. T. Shrimathy Venkatalakshmi, Assistant Professor, Anna University, Chennai, in the Mini Auditorium on 5 October 2009. The Chief Guest distributed the prizes and judged the final round of the English Debate.
