SSN College of Engineering Named an NVIDIA GPU Education Center

CHENNAI, Tamilnadu -- Sept. 21, 2015 -- SSN College of Engineering today announced that it has been named a GPU Education Center by NVIDIA, the world leader in visual computing.

GPU Education Centers are recognized institutions that have integrated GPU accelerated computing into their mainstream science and engineering curriculum. GPU computing leverages the parallel processing capabilities of GPU accelerators and enabling software to deliver dramatic increases in performance for scientific, artificial intelligence, deep learning, graphics, engineering, and other demanding applications.

Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering (SSNCE) is the outcome of the vision and initiative of Padma Bhushan Dr. Shiv Nadar , Chairman, HCL Technologies, a pioneer in the field of information technology. About Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The department offers B.E degree programs in Computer Science and Engineering and M.E degree programs in Computer Science and Engineering, and Software Engineering. The Department has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for 5 years with effect from July 2015. Prominent and leading employers are Microsoft, Amazon, PayPal, Cognizant, Infosys, HCL, Wipro, ThoughtWorks, Aricent Group, Inautix, and others. In addition, a sizeable number of students are pursuing PG studies in renowned institutions in India and abroad. It is recognized as a research centre by Anna University, Chennai, for offering PhD and M.S. programes (by way of research). The Department has well-qualified and dedicated faculty, and has organized several AICTE-STTP, faculty development programmes, as well as national and international conferences.

Research Activities in CSE

In 2006, the Department was been recognized as a Centre for Research by Anna University, offering Ph.D. and M.S. research programs. The Department has the state-of-the-art facilities for various laboratories, a well-equipped seminar hall, Wi-Fi enabled classrooms to support e-Learning, and a department library. Currently eight professors are recognized as PhD guides for pursuing research in Anna University, Chennai. At present, nearly 23 part time Research Scholars are pursuing their PhDs in CSE. Focusing on research, post-graduate students are encouraged to carry out their projects in recent research areas. Three externally funded projects sponsored by AICTE and CSI, and an internally funded project by SSN Institutions have been completed.

As per the revised Anna University syllabus, GPU computing is offered in one course titled, "Multi-Core Architecture and Programming," for VIII Semester B.E CSE and I Semester M.E CSE students.

The course objectives are: i) provide an understanding of the challenges in parallel and multi-threaded programming, ii) educate students about the various parallel programming paradigms, and solutions, iii) provide an understanding of the recent trends in the field of computer architecture and identify performance related parameters, iv) expose the students to the challenges related to multiprocessing, and v) educate students on the different types of multicore architectures.

The student outcomes are: i) identify the limitations of ILP and the need for multicore architectures, ii) develop programs using OpenMP and MPI, iii) compare and contrast programming for serial processors and programming for parallel processors, iv) discuss the issues related to multiprocessing and suggest solutions, v) point out the salient features of different multicore architectures and how they exploit parallelism and vi) discuss the architecture of GPUs, warehouse-scale computers and embedded processors
