SSN College Set to enter Limca Book of Records

Attempt to create a record by organizing an anti-smoking campaign

SSN Institutions, an initiative of Dr. Shiv Nadar, Founder, HCL Group, organized a unique anti-smoking campaign on 8th April 2009  in an attempt to forcefully propagate awareness about the ill-effects of smoking by creating a world record.

Around 2200 SSN college students across disciplines came together in their college campus and painted their hands like cigarettes, along with anti-smoking symbols written on their palms, in one hour, in an attempt to enter into the Limca book of records.

Speaking at the inaugural function Dr.E. Vidhubala, Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator, Department of Psycho-oncology and Tobacco Cessation Centre, Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, Chennai said, “Smoking has become a trend among the youth today and are caught in the death trap due to its addictive component 'Nicotine'. Smoking is very dangerous and affects virtually every organ in the body, which the younger generation of today is failing to understand. I applaud the efforts of the SSN college students for organizing this campaign to educate their peer-group about the ill-effects of smoking. It is important that the youth of today take these messages seriously”.

Ms. Kala Vijaykumar, President, SSN Institutions said, "At SSN we believe that students are the backbone of our society. Our vision is not only to impart education to students but also to groom them into socially responsible human beings and this anti-smoking campaign is a manifestation of our vision. While there is a steady decline in the habit of smoking in the western countries, it is alarming to note that it is not so in India. Smoking, which is entirely preventable, accounts for almost one tenth of all the deaths in India. We are extremely delighted that our students have attempted to create a world record through this social initiative.”
