About the Department

The Department of Information Technology was established in the year 1999. Our Mission is to provide quality education to the students and impart IT excellence in them. Apart from making them good technocrats, we also provide individual attention to make them good citizens of our nation to serve the industry and society constructively.

Drawing upon SSNCE’s tradition of teaching excellence, the department with 30 faculty members and 480/600 students of UG, PG, Ph.D/M.S research scholars, JRF and Project Staff work closely together in an open, collegial atmosphere. With Anna University’s curriculum, the department places equal emphasis on theoretical and experimental Information Technology. The department has state-of-art facilities in various labs, a well equipped seminar hall and a conference room, class rooms to support e-learning and a department library.

Measures to Improve Teaching Learning Process:

  • The teaching and learning process of our department is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in March 2015 for the second consecutive term for 5 years for the period 2015-2020. The department is also ISO 9001:2015 certified.
  • The department regularly organizes Faculty Development Programs (FDPs), Short Term Training Programmes (STTPs), Winter/Summer School Programmes, research seminars and invited talks for our faculty based on the curriculum and the recent trends in IT industries sponsored by Anna University, AICTE-ISTE, IEEE Madras Section, IEEE Computer Society, CSI, CTS, Infosys, Wipro and etc.
  • Periodic guest lectures, hands on training programmes and workshops are conducted for the students to supplement their curriculum, sponsored by our college. This facilitates our students to update their knowledge on par with the industry standards.

Accreditation

  • Accredited by NBA for the second consecutive term for 5 years for the period 2015-2020.

Organizing Events

  • Converita is the annual national level students’ technical symposium, organized by the department. The highlight of this event is its massive ability to reach thousands of participants, providing a stage for aspiring minds to establish their talents and showcase it to the right audience. The department has conducted 15 symposia so far.
  • The department has an excellent track record of organizing various FDPs, workshops and seminars in areas of emerging technology. So far, the department has organized about 83 FDPs/Workshops/Seminars/Guest Lectures.
  • The department has successfully organized the “Winter School on Speech and Audio Processing (WiSSAP 2016)”, during January 8-11, 2016. In the past 12 years, this was the second time in the history of WiSSAP that it was conducted in a private Institution like SSN outside IITs/IISc in India.
  • The department has been on the forefront in organizing conferences too. So far, the department has organized 6 National/International Conferences.
  • The department has made an important move in the direction of research by organizing ‘Research Scholars Symposium’ every year since 2015. Till now, the department has conducted research scholar’s symposia on three themes, namely: ‘Data Analytics (DA)’, ‘Data Analytics and Security’ and ‘Social Network Analysis (SNA)’.
  • The department has also taken an innovative step to encourage research and development culture amongst engineers during the formative years of their undergraduate and postgraduate studies by organizing VIVID- a National Level Project Competition as an annual event since 2016. This forum creates a platform for enabling the students of B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M.Tech of IT/CSE and ECE from various Institutions across the country to explore, enhance and exhibit their ideas and innovative skills.

Research

  • The key research areas identified by our department are Big Data Analytics & Data Mining, Semantic Web Services & Internet of Things (IoT), Speech Technology, Image Processing & Video Analytics, Wireless Communication Networks & Information Security, Cloud Computing and VLSI & Embedded Systems.
  • Out of 30 faculty members, 15 are Ph.D holders and 15 are pursuing Ph.D.
  • The department is a recognized Nodal Research Centre of Anna University Chennai since 2011, for pursuing Ph.D and M.S degree programmes. 45 scholars have registered for Ph.D. under 8 recognized supervisors and 9 Ph.Ds have been awarded so far.
  • Actively engaged in research in diverse fields, having received funded projects with a cumulative grant of 1.68 crore, sponsored by DST, DeitY, DRDO, AICTE, Murasu Systems Sdn Bhd-Malaysia, Tamil Virtual Academy (TVA) and SSN Trust.
  • The faculty and students have published 480 research papers in reputed journals and conferences.
  • The faculty members are encouraged to participate in the Faculty Development Programs (FDPs), Summer/Winter School Programmes, Workshops, Hands on Training Programs, Seminars and Conferences (National/International) arranged by other Institutions in India/abroad and leading software industries in their own research area as a step towards strengthening their domain knowledge

  • Faculty involved in training the trainers of HCL in our campus.
    • Two faculty members, Mr. K.R. Uthayan (AP/IT) and Mr. R. Vinob chander (AP/IT), are deputed to Madurai and Lucknow campuses of HCL to train the trainers respectively, for a short period.
  • Speech related consultancy activities are carried out with TVA.
  • The department is actively involved in handling classes towards SSN-Professional Development Program Course (an initiative of Redington Corporate Social Responsibility to train unemployed rural graduates) where in the following IT faculties are involved in imparting the following courses respectively:

    • Dr. N. Bhalaji (ASP/IT) along with Dr. Shashikant Albal, Director & Professor and Dr. C. Aravindan, Assistant Director & Professor, SSN School of Advanced Career Education (SSN SACE) visited MuSigma, Bangalore on 10th April, 2017 and had interaction about contribution towards syllabus framing and curricula design of Musigma course for B.E/B.Tech Freshers in their campus.
    • Dr. N. Bhalaji along with Dr. Shashikant Albal, Director & Professor, SSN School of Advanced Career Education (SSN SACE) visited Intellect Design, Chennai on 27th April 2017 and discussed possible collaboration between SSN Institutions and Intellect Design in offering “Design Thinking” course to the students of SSN through Train the trainers Mode.
  • Dr. N. Bhalaji (ASP/IT) along with Dr. Shashikant Albal, Director & Professor and Dr. C. Aravindan, Assistant Director & Professor, SSN School of Advanced Career Education (SSN SACE) visited MuSigma, Bangalore on 10th April, 2017 and had interaction about contribution towards syllabus framing and curricula design of Musigma course for B.E/B.Tech Freshers in their campus.

  • Dr. T. Nagarajan, Prof & Head/IT has received a grant of Rs. 76.6 lakhs from Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MCIT), Govt. of India, for the project titled “Development of TEXT to SPEECH SYSTEM in Indian Languages – High quality text to speech synthesis and small footprint TTS integrated with disability aids”.
  • Dr. R. Srinivasan, Prof/IT has received a grant of Rs. 31.62 lakhs from Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, for the project titled “Study of Soft Errors in 65nm Gate Length CMOS SRAM and 30nm Gate Length FinFET, TunnelFET and Junction-less FET-based SRAMs Using TCAD Simulation”.
  • Dr. R. Srinivasan, Prof/IT has received a grant of Rs. 21.8 lakhs from Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, for the project titled “Process variational study and performance analysis of nano-scale MOSFETs and FINFETs”.
  • Dr. T. Nagarajan, Prof & Head/IT has received a grant of Rs. 13.72 lakhs from Department of Science & Technology (DST) – Technology Interventions For Disabled & Elderly (TIDE), Govt. of India, for the project titled “Speech-Input Speech-Output Communication Aid (SISOCA) for Speakers with Cerebral Palsy”
  • Dr. T. Nagarajan, Prof & Head/IT has received a grant of Rs. 9.52 lakhs from Tamil Virtual Academy (TVA), Govt. of Tamilnadu for the project titled “Speech-Enabled Interactive Enquiry System in Tamil”.
  • Dr. T. Nagarajan, Prof & Head/IT has received a grant of Rs. 9 lakhs from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Govt. of India, for the project titled “An assessment and intelligibility modification system for dysarthric speakers”.
  • Dr. T. Nagarajan, Prof & Head/IT has received a grant of Rs. 4 lakhs from Murasu Systems Sdn Bhd, Malaysia for the project titled “HMM-based Text-to-Speech Synthesis System for Malaysian Tamil”.
  • Dr. P. Vasuki, Asso.Prof./IT has received a grant of Rs. 2.3 lakhs from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Govt. of India, for the project titled “Voice-enabled documentation and mailing systems in Indian languages”.
  • Dr. G. Muneeswari, Asso.Prof./IT has received a “Travel Grant” of Rs. 10, 000/- from an External Funding Agency (Centre for International Co-operation in Science (CICS), Promoted by Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in Association with Scientific Agencies & Departments) for participating in an International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science (AICS2015), held during October 2015, Penang, Malaysia.
  • The department has received a total grant of Rs. 23.88 lakhs sanctioned by SSN Trust towards internally funded faculty research projects.
  • The department has received a total grant of Rs.6.40 lakhs sanctioned by SSN Trust towards internally funded student projects.

  • The department has produced 72 University rank holders so far.

Placement

  • The department has a perfect understanding of how the corporate world works, this helps in organizing events and programs that will provide avenues to the students to get exposed to the real world of work. Guest lectures are regular affairs and the students get ample opportunities to closely interact with professionals from different industries. The department offers 3 guest lectures per semester.
  • The department also arranges in-house training, projects and internships with corporate organizations so that the students may get a comprehensive industry orientation helpful in polishing their skills before they start their actual careers.
  • The department has built an impressive placement record both in terms of percentage of registered students placed, as well as the number of companies recruiting every year. The average annual salary during campus placements for the students is Rs. 4.4 lakhs per annum. There is also a steady increase in the number of students placed with higher packages every year.

Newsletter

  • The department publishes a bi-annual department newsletter ‘IdentITy’ which serves as a window to the significant events happening in the department, the noteworthy achievements of faculty as well as students and the articles contributed by students and faculty.

 Alumni Activities

  • An AlmaConnect –a social network initiative has been taken by the SSN Management as the platform for connecting alumni with Students & Faculty of SSNCE and to interact with them in a meaningful way. The involvement of our alumni in our recent departmental activities are as follows:
