SSN Institutions Builds a Low-cost and Light-weight Support System for ALS Patients

Chennai, August 21, 2018:SSN Institutions, the first initiative of the Shiv Nadar Foundation in the field of education, today announced the development of a cost-effective andlight-weight supporting assistance for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients. The device has been developed by Assistant Professor M. Dhanalakshmi M.E.(PhD) along with her students Viswanath.S, and Praveen Kumar.G from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at SSN.

ALS is a progressive, degenerative, fatal neuromuscular disease which affects the function of nervecells in the brain and the spinal cord causing a head drooping condition. The proposed design by SSN has a three-way support system to arrest the head-movements such as flexion, extension, rotation and abduction with better efficiency than the currently available designs. The new device is not just durable and portable, but also helps in countering problems of the existing products available in the market, like suffocation, skin irritation, overheating, difficulty swallowing, and neck soreness/pain among others.

The project, which was started in 2016, has been funded by SSN as part of its Stimulating Technological Innovations and Research among Students (STIRS) scheme with a seed money ofRs. 25000. The product has been tested for the supporting bars under various conditions such as high temperature, force, force deplumation and stress analysis to understand the load distribution on support systems. The product is under validation at National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with multiple disabilities (NIEPMD), Muttukadu and The Spastics society of Tamil Nadu, Taramani. SSN has also applied for a patent for this product.

SSN initiated the  STIRS scheme in 2011 to encourage innovation and research orientation among students right from the time they join the institution. Under this scheme any UG or PG student can apply for funding from SSN for their innovative research proposals. Till date SSN has provided seed funding amounting to Rs. 1.4 crore to over 675 projects. STIRS scheme has led to an explosion of research activities among students at SSN and in 2017 alone 253 students published 228 peer reviewed papers in international journals. Also 10 patents were filed by SSN in 2017.

Speaking about the development, Ms. Kala Vijaykumar, President, SSN Institutions said,SSN provides its students a flavor of research right from the time they first join us. This is in line with our efforts towards holistic development of our students. It is very heartening to note that our students are now making us proud by developing socially relevant products. Every 5 in 100,000 Indians have ALS and I am hopeful that this new device, which is cost effective and ergonomically better, will help a larger number of ALS patients in making their life better. ”

Dhanalakshmi, Assistant Professor at SSN Institutions said, “We are very excited with the way our research work has shaped up and are grateful to the research ecosystem at SSN for supporting usin creating a modified external-aid for ALS patients. The existing products in the market weigh one to three kgs and cost in the range of Rs 40000. However, our product is made of aluminum with a weight of 800 grams and costs around Rs. 1000 only. This is an innovation which is not just affordable but also convenient for the patients dealing with a life-threatening disease like ALS.”
