SSN Students Win at Smart India Hackathon 2018- Hardware edition

Two teams from SSN College of Engineering (SSN) were declared the winners and first-runners up respectively, at The Smart India Hackathon 2018 as part of the hardware edition. hosted in Chandigarh, this was SSN’s second win in a row at the world’s biggest hackathon, which is conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. 13 teams from across the country worked for five days and built their hardware solutions.

This year, three teams from SSN were selected to participate in the Grand Finale of the Smart India Hackathon 2018. Of the participating teams from SSN, one has won the first prize of Rs. 1,00,000 and another took home the second prize of Rs. 75,000. These teams were mentored by the SSN faculty which helped them secure the winning spots.

  • Brainstorm Troopers, the winning team lead by Indulakshmi (Team members- Amirthavarshini, Uma A; S. S. Ramachandran, Sasidharan V and Sriram Vasan) mentored by Dr. Jawahar A.  of the Electronics and Communications Engineering Department at SSN won the first prize for its idea of an Asthma trigger detection system, a portable device, which can detect the level of air contamination at any place. It is an early warning prevention system which will trigger in less than two minutes. The team received a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/-.

  • Techeee 1, led by Vignesh R (Team members- Jothi Aditya, Vignesh V, Vikram AS and Sriram Sreedharan) and mentored by Dr. L Suganthi of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at SSN won the second prize and were awarded the cash prize of Rs 75,000/- for a non-invasive measurement of haemoglobin and glucose by using near-infrared spectroscopy.  The device has been developed to help detect early stages of diabetes and anaemia.

Congratulating the winners, Mrs. Kala Vijayakumar, President of SSN Institutions said, “SSN students have been consistently winning top national awards in the area of research and product development. This is a result of the strong research culture at SSN to which we expose our undergraduate students right from their first year.”

The Smart India Hackathon is a part of Shri. Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative and was launched on November 9, 2016. This year, the Smart India Hackathon 2018 (SIH 2018) as part of Digital India and Make in India initiative, is being organized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
