Dr.Ranganath Muthu, Professor in the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering has 24 years of teaching and 2 years of industrial experience in the field of Instrumentation, Control and Power Electronics. His had previously worked at the University of Bahrain, Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University and Rourkela Steel Plant.

He received the B. Tech. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, and M.E. & Ph.D. Degrees in Instrumentation Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University.

For his Ph.D., Dr. Muthu worked on the applications of fuzzy logic control and genetic algorithms to process control. He has been awarded the Young Scientist Fellowship for the year 1994-1995 by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology and during this period, he did his research on genetic algorithms applied to fuzzy logic control at Microprocessors Applications Laboratory, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore under the guidance of Prof L.M. Patnaik.

Dr. Muthu has published 40 papers in International Journals and 55 papers in proceedings of International/ National Conferences. He has organized four international conferences, three national conferences, two Anna University Faculty Development Training Programmes, in addition to many short-term courses.

Dr. Muthu’s areas of interest and research include intelligent control, fuzzy systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, advanced control, adaptive control, renewable energy and power electronics.  He is a recognized supervisor of Anna University and 5 research scholars have obtained their Ph.D. degree under his guidance. In addition, 7 scholars have registered for their Ph.D. degree under his guidance.  He has completed a research project funded by SSN Trust for Rs. 3.5 Lakhs titled ‘Design of D-STATCOM for reactive power compensation for wind turbine systems’.

He is an active member of ISA, IEEE, ISTE, ISOI and CSI and a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India). He is the Vice-Chairman of IEEE Control Systems Society, Madras Chapter and had been the President of ISA (International Society of Automation) South India Section.
